Alcohol Marketing and Youth: An Overview

Alcohol Marketing and YouthCAMY monitored the marketing practices of the alcohol industry from 2001 to
2007 to focus attention and action on industry practices that jeopardize the
health and safety of America's youth. They recognized that reducing high rates
of underage alcohol consumption and the suffering caused by alcohol-related
injuries and deaths among young people requires using the public health
strategies of limiting the access to and the appeal of alcohol to underage
persons. CAMY's research repeatedly documented that a substantial portion of
alcohol advertising is placed where youth are more likely per capita to see, hear
or read it than adults age 21 and above.

Low-Risk Drinking Guidelines: The Scientific Evidence

Low-risk Drinking GuidelinesIn 1997, the Addiction Research Foundation of Ontario and Canadian Centre
on Substance Abuse released updated guidelines for low-risk alcohol
consumption. This paper presents the scientific rationale behind this
statement. Important comprehensive overviews on the consequences of
alcohol use were studied. Formal meta-analyses on morbidity and mortality
were examined wherever possible. Individual elements from similar guidelines
were investigated for their scientific foundation. Limited original analyses
defined risk levels by average weekly consumption.

            Preventing Underage Drinking

Preventing Underage DrinkingThe purpose of this guide is to help communities go through a systematic
process of planning, implementation and evaluation that will help get results
in reducing and preventing underage drinking. Since research indicates that
altering environments where alcohol is used reduces alcohol use (e.g.,
underage drinking and driving), this guide is focused on the evidence-based
environmental approaches to preventing underage drinking that a community
might implement.

Reducing Underage Drinking: A Collective Responsibility

Reducing Underage DrinkingWhy is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent
it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens?
Reducing Underage Drinking: A Collective Responsibility, a joint report by the
National Research Council and Institute of Medicine, addresses these
questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It
explores the ways in which many different individuals and groups contribute to
the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. The report says that
reducing underage drinking requires a cooperative effort from all levels of
government, alcohol manufacturers and retailers, the entertainment industry,
parents and other adults in a community. The report proposes a
comprehensive strategy to curb underage drinking, a problem that costs the
nation an estimated $53 billion annually, due in part to losses stemming from
traffic fatalities and violent crime.

Teen Tipplers: America's Underage Drinking Epidemic

Teen TipplersBy any public health standard, America has an epidemic of underage drinking
that germinates in elementary and middle schools with children nine to
13-years old and erupts on college campuses where 44 percent of students
binge drink and alcohol is the number one substance of abuse. It is implicated
in date rape, sexual harassment, racial disturbances, drop outs, overdose
deaths from alcohol poisoning and suicides. This report makes clear: the time
and place to deal with binge drinking in college is in elementary and
high school.
